What is a constitutional election? Every few years, Texans vote on proposed amendments to the state constitution. These propositions can shape how your tax dollars are used, how local schools operate and how future legislation is implemented.
The Texas Legislature convenes on the second Tuesday of January in odd-numbered years for 140 days.
Consisting of 31 senators and 150 house members, this governing body works to pass legislation that impacts Texas residents and businesses in a wide-variety of areas. The two chambers – the Senate and the House of Representatives – work in conjunction to evaluate proposed legislation.
Civic engagement doesn’t stop on Election Day. Local government work happens year-round, and the decisions made by your elected officials impact everyday life in Collin County.
What do elected officials do?
Once elections are over, newly elected city council members, school board trustees and local leaders manage the operation of our communities by:
- Setting strategic budgets and policy priorities
- Approving projects related to transportation, public safety, parks and regional development

- Guiding public education guidelines such as curriculum guidelines, staffing priorities and district safety measures
